THOMAS HARVEY

Thomas Harvey is a fly tier from the Deep South who drays his greatest joy for re-creating, replicating, and re-designing classic bass bugs. Inspired by everything vintage, he blends classic styles and techniques from the past with new, fresh materials to build truly distinctive bugs. While Thomas ties with many materials, his true passion lies in the process of carving, sanding and painting balsa wood in the same manner it was done decades ago. What we, at Clear Cure Goo have enjoyed seeing is his creative though process and approach to flies which is normally out of the box. IAN WALLACE

I was introduced to fly tying and fishing in 1993. While I was in the Western Cape, South Africa, where I reside today. The day I bought my first fly rod, I bought a fly tying kit. Due to time constraints and limited time off work, I found myself spending more time behind the bench, than on the water. So fly tying became my biggest and most enjoyable hobby. The flies I tied most at that time were for the small streams and still waters. I then moved away from the Cape up to Johannesburg, where I started tying for other fresh water species, one of which is our indigenous species, the Yellowfish. Yellowfishing was still very much in its infancy at that stage, so there were so many possibilities to explore when it came to fly patterns. After a couple of years I started to tie salt water flies, which led to tying flies for Tiger fish. This started my custom fly tying. I have to date tied flies for destinations across the globe: Mexico; Seychelles; Mauritius; Russia; Patagonia; British Columbia; Cuba and Africa. Every destination brings new challenges and fly patterns for me to perfect. Fly tying for me, is an on-going learning curve, you can never know enough. So as we move into the future, new products and materials will revolutionise the fly tying industry, there will be so many more ideas that come to light. I believe the one product that has revolutionised the fly tying world is Clear Cure Goo; the possibilities are endless with this product.

NICK GRANATO

When I first started fly tying is was a byproduct of my angling, but over the years it has became a very organic process for me. Many of my patterns were created from less than stellar days on the water and are a my answers to challenges I’ve encountered while angling. I’m a true believer in being creative and not following anyone else’s rules while at the vise or on the water. I’m a native to Utah and I’ve grown up fishing throughout the west my entire life, this is a truly amazing place to live as a angler and tyer and I could think of another place I’d like to call home. But each year I travel to more and more in search of unique fish and the culture and people that surround them.

JOHN COLLINS

Through my teenage years I mostly pursued Trout with the spinning rod and fished the Jersey shore from party boats and the surf.
In my late teens, I caught Salmon fever, chasing the giant fish that migrated into the Great Lakes tribs. That was when I started to tie fishing flies. Mostly simple egg patterns, from chenille and eztes. In fact I started tying flies before I started fly fishing. I was very proficient at spin fishing for Trout, but something was missing. So I decided to take up fly fishing. Like I said before I was tying flies before I even picked up the long rod.
Picked up my first fly rod in my early twenties and I have never looked back. Then I met an individual by the name of George Kolasar. George was a commercial tier who would supply the shops in Roscoe NY, not only with flies, but dyed materials also. He taught me the basics, and is responsible for getting me started tying Trout patterns, among other patterns. So it is to George I owe a debt of gratitude for pointing me in the right direction as far as this wonderful hobby is concerned.
Even though George taught me in the “Catskill Tradition” I moved on to other techniques, due to the multitude of materials (Natural and Synthetic) that could be used to tie fly’s.
Instead of “Commercially” tying, my specialty is “Custom Orders” and I am always looking to improve myself as far as tying flies is concerned.
